Whole-house repipe cost estimator
Updated
Enter your home size and the number of fixtures. You get two estimates, one by floor area and one by fixture, built from published national cost data. Use them to sanity-check a quote.
Your house
Count each sink, toilet, tub, shower, dishwasher, washer, water heater and hose bib as one fixture.
How the estimate works
Plumbers quote repipes either for the whole house or per fixture, so the calculator gives both:
- By floor area. HomeGuide puts a 2,000 sq ft home at $2,000 to $4,000 for PEX and $8,000 to $16,000 for copper. That is $1 to $2 per sq ft for PEX and $4 to $8 for copper, applied to your floor area.
- By fixture. HomeGuide lists $450 to $1,800 per fixture, and Angi gives about $1,200 per fixture as a typical figure.
Angi reports an average whole-house repipe of $7,500 with most jobs between $1,500 and $15,000, and says labor is about 70% of the bill. Material alone runs about $0.40 to $2 per foot for PEX, $0.50 to $1 for CPVC and $2 to $8 for copper.
Worked example
A 2,000 sq ft house with 8 fixtures, repiped in PEX: 2,000 x $1 = $2,000 to 2,000 x $2 = $4,000 by area. By fixture, 8 x $450 = $3,600 to 8 x $1,800 = $14,400, or about $9,600 at $1,200 each. When the two methods disagree like this, the per-fixture number usually reflects more wall opening and repair. A quote near the overlap, $3,600 to $4,000, would be on the low side.
Limits
Slab homes, multiple stories, plaster walls and local permit fees push costs up. Many quotes leave out drywall patching and painting, so ask. See our pipe volume calculator to compare how much water PEX and copper lines hold.
